Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

The Journal of Constitutional Law Society (JCLS) recognizes the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including Generative AI (GenAI) and AI-assisted technologies, in scholarly publishing. JCLS supports the responsible, transparent, and ethical use of AI technologies while maintaining academic integrity, originality, accountability, and the reliability of the scholarly record.

1. Authorship and Accountability

AI tools and AI-assisted technologies cannot be listed as authors or co-authors of manuscripts submitted to JCLS because they cannot assume responsibility for the accuracy, originality, integrity, or ethical aspects of scholarly work. Authors remain fully responsible and accountable for the entire content of their manuscripts, including any sections generated, edited, translated, or enhanced using AI tools. All use of AI technologies must be conducted under direct human supervision. Authors are required to critically review, revise, and validate all AI-generated outputs to ensure academic accuracy, legal validity, ethical compliance, and proper citation practices.

2. Transparency and Disclosure

Authors must clearly disclose any use of AI or AI-assisted technologies in the preparation of manuscripts submitted to JCLS.

The disclosure should include:

  • the name of the AI tool used;
  • the purpose of AI use;
  • and the extent of AI involvement in manuscript preparation.

Disclosure may be included in the Acknowledgements section, Methods section, or in a separate Declaration of AI Use statement before the References section.

Example:

“Portions of this manuscript were edited using ChatGPT (OpenAI) to improve language clarity and readability. All AI-generated content was reviewed and verified by the authors.”

3. Permissible Use of AI

AI tools may be used only as supporting technologies for purposes such as:

  • language and grammar improvement;
  • translation assistance;
  • readability enhancement;
  • brainstorming and outlining ideas;
  • or limited drafting assistance under human supervision.

Any AI-assisted use related to data analysis, coding, visualization, or research methodology must be clearly explained and verifiable by the authors.

4. Prohibited Use of AI

The use of AI technologies for the following purposes is strictly prohibited:

  • fabrication or falsification of data;
  • generation of fake citations or references;
  • misleading legal analysis or academic arguments;
  • plagiarism or unethical publication practices;
  • manipulation of research findings;
  • or submission of unverified AI-generated content.

Violation of this policy may result in manuscript rejection, article retraction, or other editorial actions in accordance with publication ethics standards.

5. Use of AI by Editors and Reviewers

Editors and reviewers must maintain the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and should not upload unpublished manuscripts or confidential materials into AI systems without authorization. Editorial decisions, peer review evaluations, and publication recommendations must remain under human responsibility and judgment.

6. Policy Review and Updates

This policy may be reviewed and updated periodically to reflect developments in AI technologies, publication ethics standards, and scholarly publishing practices.

Ethical Commitment

JCLS is committed to promoting the ethical, transparent, and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence technologies in scholarly publishing in accordance with COPE guidelines and international academic publishing standards.
